I admit I wanted to start out 2021 with some humor, some lightness and a few clever food analogies - but the events of last week have left me at a loss for words and out of jokes.
We have to call this moment for what it is, one that is incredibly tragic for our country and democracy. In a time when we are already reeling from such overwhelming loss - we lost even more last week.
Loss of any kind is painful. But one man’s inability to admit loss will not break this country. We will not let it. It does mean, though, that we have to take some time for extreme reflection on who we actually are and what has brought us to this moment.
The reality is no one gets to skip grief. And every single person is grieving at this time. Grief can take many forms but left unacknowledged and mixed with a healthy dose of fear - it can lead to anger and outrage. This outrage when fueled, manipulated and emboldened can spark violence. And violence only produces more loss - which starts the entire cycle over again.
Acknowledging grief and loss is not sexy though. It’s not going to get you many likes or build your audience on Twitter. These complex subjects are taboo because they make us feel vulnerable and do not give us a simple answer to our pain. They are, though, the first step in healing and rebuilding a society constructively.
For those of you ready to begin the reflection and conversation, we look forward to seeing you at our next virtual dinner. Please bring a story of how something delicious soothed you during a moment of loss or a dish your family ate during the past year when loss was all around us.
